Security tightened in Kashmir for I-Day

GNS Srinagar: Security measures have been intensified across Kashmir Valley ahead of the Independence Day celebrations following stepped up militant attacks over the past week, official sources said. The police and other security forces this year resumed random frisking of pedestrians and searches of cars and motorcycles.  This comes in the wake of increase in militant activity during which ultras have shot dead a retired police officer in the city and hurled several grenades at police installations in Sopore and Kupwara areas of North Kashmir, the sources said.  Barricades have been set up at sensitive intersections, particularly those leading to Bakshi stadium -- the venue for the main Independence Day function in the state.   The security grid is making use of bomb detectors, sniffer dogs and closed circuit cameras to ensure that militants do not succeed in carrying out any spectacular attack on the eve of that day, the sources said.  More than a dozen youth had been d

PDP Demanded priority in jobs for locals in hydro electric projects in Kishtwar

GNS JAMMU AUG,13 : Opposition Peoples Democratic Party in Jammu and Kashmir today demanded priority in jobs for locals in hydro electric projects in Kishtwar district. "Compensatory programme should be started in Kishtwar area where construction of hydro electric projects have been started in a big way and locals should be given priority in these projects," PDP MLC Sayeed Asgar Ali told reporters here. Ali demanded that training institutes must be opened at Kishtwar and adjoining areas to train local youths so that they can get jobs in these projects.

Jammu and Kashmir: Muslims threaten to throw acid in faces of women who don't wear veil and shoot dead those who use cellphones

Taking a cue from Taliban extremists, militants in Kashmir have threatened to throw acid on the faces of women who use mobile phones and don’t keep veil. They have also warned members and heads of panchayats to quit the panchayats within a week. Handwritten posters, bearing the stamp of hitherto unknown terror organisation “Al-Qaeda Mujahideen,” appearing in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, have warned women and girls to wear hijab and abstain from wearing provocative dresses “failing which they have to face acid attacks.” “We appeal to the people to ensure purdah of their girls. They should not allow their girls to go out of their homes without purdah. If we spot any woman without purdah we will sprinkle acid on her face,” read the posters in Urdu.
