Basmati producers demand better facilities, compensation
Renu Bhan
GNS Report: Union Government has permitted the export the Basmati rice of the RS Pura yesterday, this has enthralled the rice growers of the state particularly plains of Jammu region. But they are also worried that stategovernment has not provided compensation to the farmers for damaged crops because of recent hailstorms. Recent hailstorms had damaged crops more than fifty percent.
The farmers are now demanding proper facilities from the state government, so that they can compete in the International Market by producing quality rice.
But the question arises in the minds of the farmer community that will the state government be able to provide all the required facilities related to the quality rice production such as irrigation, quality seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, weedicides, and other such facilities. For save the farmer from natural calamity, Crop Insurance is must, it should also be provided to the farmers, to keep their interest in the farming.
According to the reports, recent hailstorm in R S Pura, Kathua, Samba, Akhnoor, Hiranagar, and some areas of Rajouri destroyed most of the paddy crop because of which the farmer community has to face huge losses. In R S Pura alone, the hailstorm damaged the paddy crop in about 50,000 acres of land. Chunni Lal- a farmer of border area of RS Pura said that the government should first be aware of providing better facilities to the farmers and then take any decision. He also added that if the state government was willing to support the farmer community then they would certainly be able to produce better crop production and good export business outside the country. He said that this will make a profit both for the farmers and the state government.
President of Rice Grower Association, Choudhary Dev Raj said that the government should provide the compensation to the farmers regarding the damage of their crops. He also said that the crop insurance scheme introduced by the state government has totally failed to produce any results. Choudhary Dev Raj further said that they had given an ultimatum of ten days to the state government toprovide compensation to the farmer. It is pertinent to mention here that R S Pura is famous for its basmati rice production. The harvesting cost of the crop is about Rs 16,000 per acre and income to the farmers is per acre is Rs 45,000 at present. Because of thehailstorm, preparation for the next crop will also cost Rs 2,000 extra to the farmers. In this regard the state government has not provided any assistance to the farmers till date.
