QRT caught in red tape: Project yet to get finance dept clearance

Tahir Mushtaq

GNS JAMMU, Dec: The proposal for fully equipped Quick Rescue Teams (QRTs), to be deployed with ambulances for immediate rescue operations in times of road accidents on highways in the state, has been stuck with the finance department for over two year now.
“The project for purchasing equipments for QRTs on highways had been gathering dust in finance department for the last two years, with the transport ministry least bothering to make efforts for getting it cleared,” official sources said.
Sources said that though some teams were constituted under the chairmanship of deputy commissioners and deployed on accident prone areas along the highways in the mountainous Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts, yet these teams have not been provided with necessary equipments, required at the time of rescue operations, virtually making them handicapped.”
On February 2009, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had announced for deployment of QRTs equipped with ambulances for immediate rescue operations in times of road accidents on highways in the state. He had also suggested creation of a corpus to provide insurance cover to passengers travelling in commercial vehicles in the state so that in eventualities the families of the victims were paid relief from the corpus fund.
The idea behind constituting QRTs was conceived during the tenure of former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. A senior official requesting anonymity told TNI, “Nothing was done to make QRTs effective. Though we took up the matter with higher authorities several times vis-à-vis lack in infrastructure and equipments, our pleas remained unheard.”
“We had demanded ambulances, longer ropes and other equipments to retrieve injured persons and vehicles from deep gorges and the mighty Chenab flowing through these districts but we were not provided the same. It creates several problems in rescue operations and we fail sometimes to save precious human lives,” he regretted.
Minister for Transport Qamar Ali Akhoon said, “These teams are in-operation but the project for making these QRTs fully equipped have yet to get clearance from the finance department. We have also planned to deploy these teams in Rajouri and Poonch districts to save the precious human lives in teams of road mishaps.”

PDP emerged a force in Twin border District of Poonch , Rajouri

GNS RAJOURI : The way opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) led by former JK Chief Minister and erstwhile union home minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayed has been emerging as a force in the border region of Poonch , Rajouri, is really a worrying situation for Congress and National Conference . It would be much better to say that the situation if more threatening for NC as compared to Congress as the region has always been strong belt of the former for decades . The latest example is the entry of Chowdhary Qamer Hussain of Rajouri in the party fold who was earlier associated with Congress and had contested on Congress ticket from Rajouri in 2002 assembly elections , but had finished second at  that time . Qamar is not alone in the region who joined PDP in the past some months, National Conference has already received a big loss by loosing its influential cadres in Poonch district . The example is the entry of Shah Mohammad Tantray and Shehzaad Ahmed Khan of Poonch in to PDP  No...

Simultaneous alliance with Congress and BJP exhibits NC’s brazen political opportunism: PDP “Offering ‘ministerial berth’ bait manifests Omar’s insecurity”

GNS Srinagar, Nov 30: Terming Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s latest move of courting BJP as his new allies a brazen show of opportunism, opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today said the National Conference has taken the political immorality to a new low by simultaneously entering into coalition of expedience with Congress and BJP. “As NC has always survived on trickery, its latest move to woo back its old allies (BJP) is in tune with the party’s philosophy of political opportunism and deceit,” PDP chief spokesman Naeem Akhtar said in a statement issued here today. He said, curiously, developing NC-BJP bonhomie coincides with the recent visit of senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member Arun Jaitley in Jammu. Terming Omar Abdullah’s ‘ministerial berth’ bait a desperate attempt to keep the dissipating NC flock together and fully exploit disgruntled party legislators for upcoming Legislative Council polls,  Akhtar said Abdullahs have a history of adopting ‘use-a...
