Governor N.N.Vohra inaugurates 7th edition of SaMaPa Aalap
GNS JAMMU : The 7th Annual ‘SaMaPa Aalap Festival' presented by the SaMaPa (Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts) in collaboration with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and Deptt. of J&K Tourism, Jammu commenced with scintillating Santoor recital by renowned Santoor maestro and music composer Abhay Rustum Sopori.
The first session of the seventeen day long festival was inaugurated by His Excellency Sh. N.N. Vohra, Governor Jammu and Kashmir and Pandit Bhajan Sopori, the great music legend at Press Club Jammu. The concert was specially organized for the Journalists and Media personalities of Jammu & Kashmir State and music connoisseurs.
Abhay played a beautiful self composed Raga named Raga Nirmalkaunce, dedicated to the Her Holiness Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi. He presented a brief Aalap explaining the intricacies of the Raga. Abhay presented 2 compositions, a bandish ‘Jai Jai Nirmal Janani’ written and composed by Pt. Bhajan Sopori in Teentaal with exciting layakari (rhythmic sequences). He was accompanied by Zakir Akhtar Hussain on Tabla. Abhay concluded his recital with breathtaking lightening tempo. Abhay’s presentation marked high technical virtuosity demonstrating various stylistic nuances of his style, the Sopori Baaj, like Meend, Glides, Gamak, Taan, Laya and Chandh patterns, etc.
HE Governor Vohra lauded the efforts of Sopori family and its intense role in keeping the J&K culture alive. He said that Abhay has done tremendous work to revive the cultural scenario and reaching out to deep corners of the State taking culture and music to new scale. He felicitated Pt. Sopori and Abhay while Suhail Kazmi, Secretary General, Jammu Press Club felicitated Governor Vohra welcoming him, Pt. Sopori and Sh. R.K. Goyal, Principal Secretary, Governor with bouquets. Before the concert, Abhay Sopori highlighted the SaMaPa’s further initiatives and activities in the State. Abhay thanked the J&K Media for their support and cooperation to him and the over welcoming response he has received over the years in the State to make J&K a culturally vibrant State. He said the concert is a tribute to the entire media for their contribution to the State and the country. He thanked Sh. Suhail Kazmi, for hosting the inaugural concert of the 7th SaMaPa Aalap Festival. Pt. Bhajan Sopori spoke on the occasion and expressed his desire to make J&K the most prominent State in music and cultural activities. He thanked Governor Vohra for his support and inaugurating the 7th Aalap festival. Pt. Sopori said that the youth needs a positive direction and avenues in music which need to be created to take forward the rich cultural heritage of the country.
The festival will now feature more than 30 presentations till 13th February at more than 20 different venues across the region, border areas, Central Jail, and many other venues by a number of upcoming and eminent musicians of the State and the country. The Festival will feature two concerts on 29th January at Khour and TRT Camp Muthi featuring Abhay Sopori’s Santoor at 11:00 am and 3 pm respectively.

Water mapping survey disappoints state planners

Tahir Mushtaq  GNS JAMMU, Mar 03: The much awaited water mapping survey conducted to find new sources of ground water in Jammu and Kashmir by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has found that most of the water reserves are unsuitable for human consumption. Sources said that the remote sensing technology survey carried out by the government with the help of ISRO has found high level of iron and fluoride contents in the underground sources of water found in the state.  The report says that many of the newly found underground water channels have been found at inaccessible locations, which need sophisticated technology to extract, beyond the range of equipment what the engineers are using in the country at the moment.
