GNS Srinagar, May 21 : Peoples Democratic Party today lashed at the coalition government headed by National Conference for ignoring the far flung areas, which continue to suffer in the absence of even the basic amenities of life.
Addressing party workers, during a daylong tour of Karnah constituency in Kupwara district, PDP chief spokesperson Naeem Akhtar said that corruption and inefficiency of government have added to the miseries of common masses in the far flung areas like Karnah.
“The tall claims of prosperity and development seems only limited to the official documents and press statements of the ruling parties”, he said adding that the areas like Karnah still struggle for the basic necessities like electricity, roads, health and communication.
He said that unfortunately the benefits of central sponsored schemes like PMGSY was not being extended to the people of this far flung area, mainly due to the strict norms provided by the central ministry. “The government is unable to provide the work under PMGSY to its blue-eyed contractors due to the strict norms as such the scheme has almost been shelved in the area”, he said.
He added that from the last sixty years road from Tangdhar to Teetwal and Tangdhar to Amrohi were awaiting completion. The health institutions, including the government hospital at Chamkote, were without the requisite staff while the college established in the year 2006 continues to function in two-room accommodation.
Akhtar said that the people have been deprived of the communication facilities. “The landline telephony was almost defunct while the government has not permitted the mobile phone services in the area for some unknown reasons”.
He said that nepotism and corruption has reached at an alarming stage and contractors have become synonymous to National Conference in the area. “Making the things worst, whatever little money was being spent in the area, it was being ensured that the contracts were allotted to blue-eyed and kith and kins of ruling class”. The money so earned, he said, is than utilized for carrying party activities of National Conference and building assets of its leadership outside Karnah.
He said that despite having huge tourism potential, the government is yet to include Karnah on the tourist map. The Cross LoC Travel from Teetwal has been reduced to a symbolic gesture only denying benefit not only to the intending visitors but even the local population, which could have seen an economic boost if the same spot was used for Cross LoC Trade as well.
He said that PDP during its rule has envisaged programme for socio-ecnomic upliftment of the far flung and border areas like Karnah. “One of the key feature of the cross LoC trade and travel was to help the local population in their economic upliftment”, he said.
“Have the process not been stalled by the National Conference, for its political gains, Karnah would have been in mainstream from the dead end, which it has been reduced to after partition”, Akhtar said adding that the present dispensation instead of carrying forward the process of the previous government ensured that long cherished dream of the people is reduced to symbolic gesture.
Member Legislative Assembly from Lolab and District President PDP Abdul Haq Khan, Advocate Raja Manzoor, Zone President, and Muhammad Afzal Wani also accompanied Akhtar.
