GMC without fire fighting system

Tahir Mushtaq
GNS JAMMU, Dec : Despite being one of the biggest hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir, Government Medical College Hospital (GMC&H) is awaiting a major disaster as it has a defunct Central Fire Control System to deal with any major fire incident.
Sources said that the multi-crore system installed in the hospital, two decades has become obsolete and the authorities at the helm of affairs are sitting over the proposal to upgrade it risking the lives of thousands of people visiting the hospital daily.
Sources said that the fire control system was installed at the time of construction of the building about 20 years back. However in absence of proper maintenance and look after it became defunct over the years and now the vital public asset with hundreds of crores of health infrastructure eludes any fire fighting system.
“The main reason behind the collapse of the system was the lack of trained persons who are able to keep the system shipshape and also hold drills at regular intervals” said an official on the condition of anonymity. He said that at all if the system was restored there was no expert here who can check whether it was in order and would trigger automatically in case of any eventuality.
A senior doctor said that the network of water sprinkling pipes have gathered rust and these were leaking at various places due to which the entire system has become useless and defunct.
They said that the engineering wing of the hospital had formulated a proposal two years back wherein the cost of the repair for the system was estimated at Rs 30 lakh. But owing to the indifference of the authorities no progress was made in this regard till date.
Another case in hospital which shows the negligent attitude is the non- working of dialysis machines for the past more than two weeks as the two machines available for carrying the dialysis are out of order. This is not that something has happened for the first time, it occurs every now and then.
Some sources also revealed that the malfunctioning of the machines was the outcome of the lethargic approach of the GMC management. It was also learnt that defunct machines had added an extra pressure to the Dialysis Unit of the ASCOMS Hospital.

When the holy Quran was placed before Mohammed Maqbool Butt on the morning of February 11,

When the holy Quran was placed before Mohammed Maqbool Butt on the morning of February 11, 1984, he knew that death awaited him in the phansi kothi a few yards away. A high voltage bulb burning outside the grated doors of his solitary cell in the death row was indicative of the outside darkness. If he had had any hopes of living awhile yet, they were dashed by the presence of the” prison doctors. Jail superintendent, A.B. Shukla/had paid Butt a visit in the middle of the previous night. Shukla chatted with him for a long time but cautiously avoided any talk about the execution. “I will see you on Monday”, Butt’s counsel on record, the sallow-complexioned R.C. Pathak, had told him during a brief interview they were allowed on the evening of February 10. In answer, the condemned Kashmir Liberation Front leader, who was awarded the death sentence of the murder of a CID officer in 1966, had meaningfully remarked: “Do you think they will permit us a second meeting?” He was right! Butt was n...

PDP emerged a force in Twin border District of Poonch , Rajouri

GNS RAJOURI : The way opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) led by former JK Chief Minister and erstwhile union home minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayed has been emerging as a force in the border region of Poonch , Rajouri, is really a worrying situation for Congress and National Conference . It would be much better to say that the situation if more threatening for NC as compared to Congress as the region has always been strong belt of the former for decades . The latest example is the entry of Chowdhary Qamer Hussain of Rajouri in the party fold who was earlier associated with Congress and had contested on Congress ticket from Rajouri in 2002 assembly elections , but had finished second at  that time . Qamar is not alone in the region who joined PDP in the past some months, National Conference has already received a big loss by loosing its influential cadres in Poonch district . The example is the entry of Shah Mohammad Tantray and Shehzaad Ahmed Khan of Poonch in to PDP  No...
