GNS JAMMU, FEB 14 : The Government is contemplating to extend Insurance Cover Scheme to the cattle population of nomadic Schedule Tribes (ST) associated with cattle raring activity.
This was stated by the Minister for Social Welfare and Tribal Affairs Ms. Sakina Itoo while chairing a high level meeting of officers convened to take stock of the problems of Gujjar and Bakerwal community during their migration towards higher reaches and back along with their cattle.
The Minister of State for Haj and Auqaf, Fisheries and Social Welfare Mr. Aijaz Ahmad Khan, Commissioner Secretary Social Welfare Mr. Jeet Lal Gupta, Commissioner Secretary Animal Husbandry Mr. Saleem Kabra, Commissioner Secretary Higher Education Mrs. Naseema Lankar, Technical Secretary Forest, Special Secretary Dr. G. N. Itoo, Director Tribal Affairs and Director Agriculture Planning Wing attended the meeting.
It was decided in the meeting that the Forest Department will be approached to submit detailed list of the places where the nomad population are mainly living during their migration.
The meeting was informed that the pastures on higher reaches which are already being looked into by the Forest Department under Pasture Development Scheme needs to be streamlined for the convenience of the nomads.
It was given out in the meeting that the Health Department will ensure healthcare facilities for the nomad population and for this purpose the department shall impart necessary training to a qualified unemployed youth of the community on the pattern of “Asha Worker”. Likewise the Animal Husbandry Department will take care of the cattle population of the community and the Shepherds may also be deputed towards the pastures.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that the government was aware of the problems being faced by the nomads during their migration. She said that various schemes are under way for the upliftment of the Gujjar and Bakerwals and more schemes are being introduced to benefit this community.
The Minister also asked the concerned officers to explore the possibility of organizing the woman and youth of the nomadic families in Self Help Groups (SHGs) to take up activities suitable at their places. She suggested that the SHGs so constituted can take up dairy, apiculture and like activities for which the government would provide them soft loans and also provide market opportunities.
