GNS JAMMU MAY 29 : KASHMIRINK Foundation launched climate change awareness with the students of St. Mary's Presentation Convent School at Jammu today. Mr. Babar Afza, the chairman of the Foundation and Henna, the President are spearheading the campaign across J&K from the past few years and have a massive brigade of climate activists and climate warriors who are spreading the word about climate change and also teaching various ways to combat the same by bringing in lifestyle changes to school children, college students, industries, academicians, policy makers etc.
Speaking on the occasion Mr. Abhinandan Singh who is the member of the Foundation made the entire school understand the importance of understanding Climate Change and Global warming. The school took the Kashmirink Climate Warrior Pledge and Mr. Babar and Henna interacted with the Environment Club of the school that included Sister Slsie ( Vice Principle ), Mainsha Sharma, Aditi Raina, Priya Lakshmi, Simranpreet Kour, Abhigya Langhe, Iruvantika Chaudhary and made them go through the ten things that school children and kids can do to combat climate change by bringing in a lifestyle change. Mr. Babar also emphasised in the discussion, that how Earth is the only planet in our solar system that supports life. The complex process of evolution occurred on Earth only because of some unique environmental conditions that were present, water, an oxygen-rich atmosphere, and a suitable surface temperature. The single human activity that is most likely to have a large impact on the climate is the burning of "fossil fuels" such as coal, oil and gas. These fuels contain carbon and burning them makes carbon dioxide gas. Since the early 1800s, when people began burning large amounts of coal and oil, the amount of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere has increased by nearly 30%, and average global temperature appears to have risen between 1° and 2°F. Carbon dioxide gas traps solar heat in the atmosphere, partly in the same way as glass traps solar heat in a sunroom or a greenhouse. For this reason, carbon dioxide is sometimes called a "greenhouse gas". As more carbon dioxide is added to the atmosphere, solar heat has more trouble getting out. The result is that, if everything else stayed unchanged, the average temperature of the atmosphere would increase.
As people burn more fossil fuel for energy they add more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. If this goes on long enough, the average temperature of the atmosphere will almost certainly rise. If global warming occurs, not every day or every place will be warmer. But on average most places will be warmer. This will cause changes in the amount and pattern of rain and snow, in the length of growing seasons, in the frequency and severity of storms, and in sea level. Farms, forests, and plants and animals in the natural environment, will all be affected.
It was also explained to the students, how the water level of Jammu has gone down and how the river bed of Tawi is changing and how these are signs of the massive changes which are happening around in the environment and what each student should do in their schools, homes and communities to encourage people to become environment friendly. In the end the School Environment Club presented a theatre act to highlight the habits and attitude which needs to be changed to combat climate change.
