townhall.jpgGNS SRINAGAR MAY 21: Former minister and AICC member Abdul Gani Vakil  said that the resolution passed in the one day party convention at SKICC in Srinagar was aimed at strengthening Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir State at all levels. Endorsing the resolution empowering AICC Chief Sonia Gandhi to nominate party president for J&K State and constitute rest for the organizational structure, Vakil said that this would go a long way in strengthening the party’s structure.
He said that whatever will be the decision of the party high command it will be acceptable to the party leaders and workers here in Jammu and Kashmir state.
Vakil was addressing a workers meeting of Congress Seva Dal at town hall Anantnag today. Speaking on the occasion he said that elected Panchayats in the entire state were loosing their relevance in absence of substantial powers granted to the sarpanches and panches. These elected sarpanches and panches, he said must be empowered henceforth for which the Congress in its one day convention has also passed a resolution.
He said that these elected bodies were meaningless unless empowered and involved in the development works. The government, he said must extend 73rd amendment to the state Panchayati Raj Act so that elected sarpanches and panches function like the true representatives of people and contribute in the development schemes.
Coming down heavily on the opposition,Vakil said that those out of power were speaking out of frustration. He said that opposition leaders after having withdrawn the support to the then Ghulam Nabi Azad government had committed a blunder and now were repenting over their action. The role being played by the opposition in the present contest too was not appreciable.
Vakil said issues raised by the opposition were more aimed at snatching power than that of public importance. He said opposition must play constructive role in the given scenario so that a check is laid on the government. He said the development works started by the former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad were lying abandoned and work on the same must also be started at the earliest.
He also asked the government to look into the details of deaths of hundreds of infants in G B Pant hospital and take remedial measures. There was a need of investigating the cause of death than hiring and firing the employees. He said that augmentation of hospital staff was one thing which was needed but the government must investigate the exact cause of deaths so that that particular grey area could be removed for the survival of children. He demanded the judicial probe in to the deaths of infants by a sitting judge of the high court
Besides others who addressed the gathering include Sr. Congress leader and Former MP Janak Raj Gupta, MLC Haji Ali Mohammad Bhat, General Secretary J&K PCC Dr. Abdul Ahad Yatoo, District Chief Sevadal Gul Mohammad, Sr. Congress Leaders Advocate Wajahat Hussain, Nissar Ahmad Khan, Khaja Mohammad Sultan and Ghulam Ahmad Lone

PDP emerged a force in Twin border District of Poonch , Rajouri

GNS RAJOURI : The way opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) led by former JK Chief Minister and erstwhile union home minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayed has been emerging as a force in the border region of Poonch , Rajouri, is really a worrying situation for Congress and National Conference . It would be much better to say that the situation if more threatening for NC as compared to Congress as the region has always been strong belt of the former for decades . The latest example is the entry of Chowdhary Qamer Hussain of Rajouri in the party fold who was earlier associated with Congress and had contested on Congress ticket from Rajouri in 2002 assembly elections , but had finished second at  that time . Qamar is not alone in the region who joined PDP in the past some months, National Conference has already received a big loss by loosing its influential cadres in Poonch district . The example is the entry of Shah Mohammad Tantray and Shehzaad Ahmed Khan of Poonch in to PDP  No...

When the holy Quran was placed before Mohammed Maqbool Butt on the morning of February 11,

When the holy Quran was placed before Mohammed Maqbool Butt on the morning of February 11, 1984, he knew that death awaited him in the phansi kothi a few yards away. A high voltage bulb burning outside the grated doors of his solitary cell in the death row was indicative of the outside darkness. If he had had any hopes of living awhile yet, they were dashed by the presence of the” prison doctors. Jail superintendent, A.B. Shukla/had paid Butt a visit in the middle of the previous night. Shukla chatted with him for a long time but cautiously avoided any talk about the execution. “I will see you on Monday”, Butt’s counsel on record, the sallow-complexioned R.C. Pathak, had told him during a brief interview they were allowed on the evening of February 10. In answer, the condemned Kashmir Liberation Front leader, who was awarded the death sentence of the murder of a CID officer in 1966, had meaningfully remarked: “Do you think they will permit us a second meeting?” He was right! Butt was n...
