Regional Autonomy in J and K

By: Balraj Puri     There have been recent demands for the release of the report of interlocutors appointed by the Government of India on Jammu and Kashmir. Some unofficial leaks suggest that the interlocutors have recognized special position of the state and special problems for the regions within the state.  Regional tensions continues to be as serious a problem of Jammu and Kashmir state as it used to be before independence. Before 1947, Hindu and Muslim leadership of Jammu tended to unite behind the Dogra Maharaja and supported his desire for an independent state. Petitioner sent to JC for producing forged documents

GNS JAMMU, Dec :  A petitioner, who produced fake documents in the High Court, was today taken into judicial custody on the directions of Justice J P Singh. The order was passed in a petition filed by Haq Nawaz Ahmed, who submitted that he had married Ambika Thakur alias Aisha after her conversion to Islam and presently his wife was in the custody of Sunil Kumar Sharma. He sought directions for production of Aisha in the court. During the course of consideration of the case, the original documents relied upon by the petitioner were examined. The marriage agreement produced by the petitioner to support his plea that he had married Ambika after her conversion to Islam, was shown to have been registered by KS Sethi, Munsiff. However, upon enquiry from Registrar Judicial, it was found that there was no such Munsiff in the State Judiciary by the name of K S Sethi. QRT caught in red tape: Project yet to get finance dept clearance

Tahir Mushtaq  GNS JAMMU, Dec: The proposal for fully equipped Quick Rescue Teams (QRTs), to be deployed with ambulances for immediate rescue operations in times of road accidents on highways in the state, has been stuck with the finance department for over two year now.  “The project for purchasing equipments for QRTs on highways had been gathering dust in finance department for the last two years, with the transport ministry least bothering to make efforts for getting it cleared,” official sources said.  Sources said that though some teams were constituted under the chairmanship of deputy commissioners and deployed on accident prone areas along the highways in the mountainous Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts, yet these teams have not been provided with necessary equipments, required at the time of rescue operations, virtually making them handicapped.”  On February 2009, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had announced for deployment of QRTs equipped with ...

SIT Solved 2009 Budhal Murder Case,

GNS Rajouri , Dec  :By Shafiq Mir  Special investigation team (SIT) constituted on the directions of high court has claimed to have solved murder case of one Karnail Singh son of Inder Singh of village Bela Khawaas in Budhal by arresting seven persons including an ex-police man Barkat Hussain for his direct role of destroying all evidences in the murder. The arrested cop was investigating officer in the case two years ago.  Karnail Singh was found murdered on the road side on September 12, 2009. 19 0f 24 AFSPA Cases Against Army Rejected

GNS JAMMU DEC. The Jammu and Kashmir government has in the last five years sought sanction for prosecution against Army personnel in 24 cases under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) of which 19 were rejected as no prima facie case was made out against the accused officials, Lok Sabha was informed today.  "24 cases seeking sanction for prosecution under AFSPA have been received from Jammu and Kashmir Home Department during the last five years from 2007 to December 15 this year," Defence Minister AK Antony said in reply to a written question. GNS SRINAGAR, Dec : The government’s claim of funding Madrasas in the state seems inducing a new political controversy with parties across the board questioning the authenticity of the claims and utilisation of the funds. Roof collapse at SMGS hospital, major tragedy averted

By Tahir Mushtaq   GNS JAMMU, Dec  : A scrap of the nurses' ward’s roof collapsed in the Gynaecology and children's wing of a government hospital here on Saturday afternoon, raising question mark over the 60-year old building, housing one of the largest children hospital in Jammu region.  Police sources informed that there was no report of any death or injury, but general chaos prevailed in the hospital for many hours as patients and officials visited the spot where the roof collapsed.  Spokesperson from the Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital informed that the children's ward had been vacated a few days ago for repair work.  Top officials and rescue teams immediately rushed to the spot. Train derailment Inquiry began

GNS SRINAGAR : Railways today began inquiry into the train derailment in Anantnag district last month in which more than 20 persons were injured. "R K Kardham, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Northern Circle today began the inquiry into the accident that took place on November 23," an official spokesman said. A number of witnesses were examined at Budgam Railway office on first day of inquiry, which  will continue tomorrow, he said. "Anyone from general public, interested in providing any information regarding the accident, can also depose before the inquiry tomorrow during working hours," he added. At least 20 persons were injured on November 23 when a train from Qazigund to Srinagar derailed in Kulgam district. It was the first such incident since train services were launched in Kashmir Valley in 2008. Preliminary inquiry had suggested that the accident took place because of problem in the brakes of the train.
