Suicides in Jammu & Kashmir

By Dr. Raminder Jit Singh  The word “Suicide” has been defined as an act or instance of taking one’s life voluntarily and intentionally; the deliberate and intentional destruction of one’s own life by a person; one that commits or attempts self-murder. An increasing number of suicides is an alarming situation and a matter of concern these days. It is a social evil and threat to mankind and humanity itself as a whole. Suicide estimates suggest fatalities worldwide could rise to 1.5 million by the year 2020. Suicide is a largely preventable public health problem, causing almost half of all violent deaths as well as economic costs in the billions of dollars, says the World Health Organization (W.H.O). JK Yateem Foundation bags prestigious award

GNS Srinagar, Aug 24: Jammu and Kashmir Yateem Foundation (JKYF) has bagged the Resource Alliance India- The Rockefeller Foundation INDIA NGO Award under Rising Star category, for 2011. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni presented the award to JKYF’s Patron Er Syed Abdul Hamid, at INDIA NGO AWARDS- 2011 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. Ambika Soni in her speech congratulated all the recipients of awards under different categories and stressed upon the NGOs to work sincerely, effectively and professionally for better results on ground. The India NGO Awards 2011 is a joint venture of the UK based Resource Alliance India and US based The Rockefeller Foundation, Asia to reward the best non governmental organizations and seeks to promote good standards and practices in resource mobilization, accountability and transparency.

PDP demands withdrawal of cases against 2 Udhampur youth

GNS Srinagar, Aug 23: Demanding immediate withdrawal of cases against two Udhampur youth allegedly wearing a particular green colour dress, Nayeem Akhter, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief spokesperson today said such tactics shows how the present government exposes youth of the state to worst kind of manipulations and suppression. In a statement issued here today, Akhter said: “This is a ridiculous atrocity perpetrated by the present dispensation on youth and by resorting to such kind of tactics, shows how this government exposes our youth to worst kind of repression.” He added that such kind of police action in no way can contribute positively and instead it will promote lawlessness in the state.  “It is disgraceful and reprehensible, and it is abhorrent that youth are arrested and frivolous charges are fabricated against them,” Akhter said, while demanding immediate withdrawal of cases against the two Udhampur youth.  

Sikh Religious and Political Organizations Hold Press Conference,Connection with the recent developments pertaining to the 1947 POK Refugees:-

GNS JAMMU AUG, 24 :It is a pleasant surprise that  Saif-ud-Din Soz, State Congress  Chief, along with other Sr. Party Leaders, in the long last, have  woken up from 65 years long deep slumber and some welcome murmur has  taken place in the high circles at Delhi pertaining to the hapless  1947, POK Refugees plus other categories of refugees. Earlier during 2004 general elections campaign S. Manmohan Singh while  addressing a 1947, Refugee basti at Simbal Camp, had categorically  assured the audience, that grievances of the 1947, POK refugees would  be resolved, if voted to power. But, after attaining political power at the centre, this commitments was given a go-bye, except monitoring  the internally displaced K.P.s who are part of the Nehru vian clan.  Likewise recommendations made by different committees, interlocutors  and commissions  such as  N.N. SaMaPa condoles Abdul Rahim Bhat’s demise.

GNS JAMMU AUG. 24 :SaMaPa (Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts), the prestigious music academy, in an emergency meeting here have condoled the sad demise of Abdul Rahim Bhat, the veteran folk musician of J&K. Chairman of SaMaPa and music legend Pandit Bhajan Sopori termed Bhat’s death a great loss to the folk culture of Kashmir. General Secretary of SaMaPa and music maestro Abhay Rustum Sopori remembered the departed soul as a legendary folk singer who gave a new dimension to the folk singing with his renditions.   SaMaPa expresses heartfelt condolences with the family and friends of the great musician.
