Excerpts from the press conference addressed by PDP senior leaders and former deputy chief minister Muzaffar Hussain Beig

GNS REPORTER :Muzaffar Hussain Beig, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senior leader and former deputy chief minister today said National Conference has played a pivotal role in systematic demolition of institutions of fairness, transparency and local self governance. Beig said NC was never in favour of empowering Panchayats in the state which is evident from the existing structure of Panchayats in the state. National Conference’s excuse that 73 rd  amendment in Central Panchayat Act can not be extended to Jammu and Kashmir is a farce to befool the people.  If there are any shortcomings or deficiencies in the J&K Panchayat Act, the same can be removed thorough amendments based on features of 73 rd  amendments of Central Panchayat Act which can be carried out through a simple majority in the state legislature.  PDP had brought a bill for the empowerment of Panchayats in the state in 2004 but NC sabotaged it. GNS Jammu-September 29 :Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Youth Congress held a strong protest demonstration  and tried to block the Tawi bridge Jammu today to press their demand  for giving powers  and security to Panchayats . The protest was led by Mr. Chetan Pratap Singh Chouhan-Secretary IYC, incharge J&K affairs, PYC  President Mr. Shah Nawaz Choudhary, Vice President Pranav Shagotra, PYC General Secretaries S.Manjeet Singh Jatt Mr. Abid Kashmiri and  Jammu- Poonch Lok Sabha President Satish Sharma . The thousands  of activist of youth Congress assembled at Press Club Jammu  today morning and started march towards Tawi Bridge. Mufti advises caution in Panchaya discourse ‘Empowerment of people aim of PDP’

GNS Srinagar Sept 29: Asserting that empowerment of people through elected institutions was an important aim of his party the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has urged restraint in the debate over security and empowerment of Panchs and Sarpanchs to help their functioning and well being. Vakil condemned suppressive action of the government to curb peaceful demonstration by youth congress for implementing 73 rd  and 74 th  amendments GNS Srinagar 29 Sep 2012: Sr. Congress leader and Member AICC Abdul Gani Vakil today condemned suppressive action of the government to curb peaceful demonstration by youth congress for implementing 73 rd  and 74 th  amendments in the state and described the incident as unfortunate and blot on democracy. He said that Youth Congress leaders had all the right to protest peacefully but police action on them has undermined the democratic values in our state. In his statement, Vakil asked the chief minister Omar Abdullah to not to use suppressive measures for curbing the popular voice of empowering panchayats in Jammu and Kashmir state, elections to which were held after over three decades.
