MBBS Seats Increase Proposal Still A Dream

Proposal to increase MBBS seats in medical colleges of J&K still a dream. By Tahir Mushtaq   GNS JAMMU : While government makes tall claims of improving the health infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, but it mostly forgets to fully implement its policies.  Few years back, department of health and medical education had submitted a proposal to increase the number of seats in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in both the Government Medical Colleges (GMC) of Jammu and Srinagar from 100 to 150 per college.  The same was planned to implement from the next session, but till date nothing changed in the number of seats in MBBS.  Sources said that the Medical Council of India (MCI) teams have also conducted two inspections in both Medical Colleges of the state.  Similarly, in the GMC Srinagar, the teams had pointed out shortage of faculty in some streams. 80, 000 old age pension cases pending in Jammu region

By Sunny Sangral  GNS JAMMU, : Nearly 80,000 applications seeking pension under the Integrated Social Security Scheme (ISSS) are pending with the social welfare department in Jammu region, denying the financial assistance to the beneficiaries to be targeted under the scheme.  ISSS covers aged, handicapped, widows and other poor sections of the society who have been brought under the scheme to allow them to live a life of dignity. The scheme is fully financed and sponsored by the state government.  While the officials claim that scarcity of funds is delaying the approval of the pending cases, but sources said that corruption and embezzlement in the department has slowed down the process in entire state with the needy being the end sufferers.  Under the scheme a meager amount of Rs 200 per month is being given to widows, destitute, divorces and old people, while Rs 400 is being paid to physically challenged persons.  “Lack of coordination between the concerned district aut
