Mebooba calls for revival of University Student Unions ‘IUST sets an example that should be emulated’

GNS Srinagar Dec : Welcoming the establishment of a students union in the Islamic university of Science and Technonogy, Awantipore (IUST) Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and leader of the opposition today called for revival of student bodies in all the universities of the state. In a statement here Mehbooba Mufti said the IUST had set a shining example of democratization of the campus activity and the state must take a cue from it to revive student unions in other universities as well.  Mehbooba said the political system in the state has not benefited from the universities and institutions of higher learning as much as it should have and it was time that this deficiency is addressed. She said these institutions must serve as catchments for the political field as it serves other walks of life. “That objective can be achieved better by allowing unhindered student activity through their unions” she said. GNS Kathua, Dec : Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today flayed the National Conference led coalition regime for adopting anti working class policy in the state. Addressing one day convention of the district Kathua unit of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Trade Union-the labour wing of PDP,  Thakur Balbir Singh general secretary of PDP lambasted the coalition regime for adopting adamant attitude in solving long pending demands of the employees. GNS Reasi ; Deputy Superintendent of Police was arrested today for allegedly abusing a woman police officer publicly in Reasi district. DSP (Headquarters) Mohmmad Aslam had allegedly abused Additional SP Anita Sharma in Reasi town, police said adding a departmental probe would be held into the matter. "We have arrested the DSP on charges of abusing a senior woman police officer publicly and a case has been registered against him," Senior Superintendent of Police, Reasi, R K Chourasia said. 449 gazetted officers facing corruption charges in J&K

Tahir Mushtaq  GNS JAMMU, Dec : While the appointment of Chairman State Accountability Commission (SAC) has been put into cold storage, nearly 449 senior officers are facing trial in courts in different corruption cases in Jammu and Kashmir.  Sources said that nearly 210 cases involved 449 gazetted officers are pending before the Courts of Special Judge Anti-Corruption in Jammu and Srinagar.  Cases are also pending against 30 IAS officers, 20 IPS officers, 10 IFS officers, 3 former Vice-Chancellors of Universities, former Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Bank, 4 former Chief Engineers and former Director General of Police (DGP), official sources said.  Around 245 complaints against former and present ministers, MLAs of Jammu and Kashmir are pending before the Commission.
