IRPF cop dies mysteriously


GNS JAMMU RAJOURI, Dec 3: An Indian Reserve Police Force (IRPF) Constable driver died in a mysterious shootout at the official quarter of his Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) at Sainik Colony, today.
Police, however, said that the cop committed suicide by shooting himself after snatching service rifle of his colleague at the residence of DySP IRP 11th Battalion Daljit Singh in Sainik Colony while the family alleged of him being shot dead by his Company Commander in presence of the said DySP under the influence of liquor.
People including the family members and relatives of the deceased, who was scheduled to marry on December 11, staged noisy protest at Gujjar Mandi and later blocked Abdullah Bridge in Rajouri for hours, this evening.
IRP Constable Shahid Mehboob Bhat (number 550), son of Haji Abdul Qayoom Bhat, resident of Ward number 8, Rajouri deputed as a driver with DySP Daljit Singh died in a mysterious shootout at the residence of latter.
Police said that he committed suicide by shooting himself after snatching INSAS rifle of his colleague (PSO of DySP) Constable Ajay Kumar at the residence of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) at Sainik Colony.
As his marriage was scheduled on December 11, police sources said, he approached IRPF Commandant at Battalion Headquarter in Kullian area of Simbal Camp for sanctioning leave. The latter asked for nod from DySP with whom he was deployed. Shahid then approached DySP Daljeet Singh at his residence in Sainik Colony in the morning at 8.30 AM and requested for leave. Getting negative response, the cop got dejected. He snatched the INSAS Rifle of DySP’s PSO and shot himself dead. He fired three rounds from the weapon into his chin resulting in on the spot death, police sources added.
The cop was, however, shifted to the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital where doctors pronounced him as brought dead.
Inquest proceedings under section 174 CrPC has been initiated by the police while the reason behind this extreme step by the constable has not been yet ascertained, police sources maintained.
The kin of the deceased reportedly entered into verbal dual with DySP when he came to GMC mortuary.
The family members alleged that the body was not handed over to the family and the authorities were trying to temper the evidence to convert the murder into suicide.
GNS Rajouri adds:
People took to streets this evening in protest against alleged killing of cop by DySP. The protestors were demanding immediate arrest of the officer responsible for killing the cop. Hundreds of people including the family members and relatives took to streets soon after they came to know that cop belonging to district Rajouri was shot dead by his officer in Jammu on Saturday.
The protestors alleged, on Saturday morning, he approached to his Company Commander at 8 .30 AM and requested for leave as his marriage was scheduled on December 11. The Company Commander was at the residence of DySP Daljeet Singh in Sainik Colony area of Jammu. As the deceased Constable requested for leave, there was a verbal duel between cop and his officer. The Company Commander brought out his revolver and fired on the driver in presence of DySP Daljeet Singh and he died on spot. There had been a verbal duel between Company Commander and deceased cop last night also, the protestors maintained.
The protestors were later pacified by the senior officers of district administration.

Water mapping survey disappoints state planners

Tahir Mushtaq  GNS JAMMU, Mar 03: The much awaited water mapping survey conducted to find new sources of ground water in Jammu and Kashmir by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has found that most of the water reserves are unsuitable for human consumption. Sources said that the remote sensing technology survey carried out by the government with the help of ISRO has found high level of iron and fluoride contents in the underground sources of water found in the state.  The report says that many of the newly found underground water channels have been found at inaccessible locations, which need sophisticated technology to extract, beyond the range of equipment what the engineers are using in the country at the moment.
