Economically self-reliant J&K my endeavor: Omar

Jammu, February 13 – Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah Monday said that economically self-reliant Jammu and Kashmir progressing in peaceful and tranquil atmosphere is his keen objective.
“I want to create a strong foundation for economic self-sufficiency of the State by utilizing its rich potential for hydro energy”, he said maintaining that this is the only viable sector which can give considerable fillip to the economy of the State. “We are in a position to generate 20000 MWs of power from our rivers and sell it to generate earnings for wide-ranging development and welfare works”, he added.
Interacting with a group of IPS probationers who called on him here, the Chief Minister said that the economic strength of Jammu and Kashmir lies in its power sector. “My initiatives to generate maximum hydro energy and transform State’s economy are being carried forward significantly to make necessary dent in this direction”, he said.
The Chief Minister said that there is huge gap between income and expenditure in Jammu and Kashmir and he has to request the Central Government time and again for additional funds. “My desire is to make the State economically strong to stand upon its own feet”, he said asserting that power sector is only viable medium in this regard.
Omar Abdullah said that peace is imperative to make headway on the economic and development front, as such, the government endeavours positively works for restoration of permanent peace in the State.
The Chief Minister told the IPS probationers who have been allotted Jammu and Kashmir Cadre to make constant public rapport their standard in service. “There is no alternative to public rapport”, he told them adding that their regular interaction with people would help them in rendering their duties in a professional manner as also addressing the public grievances effectively. He said this aspect is of highest importance for the success of any officer.
Asking IPS probationers to make truthfulness and honesty benchmark of their service, the Chief Minister said that people have greater expectations from the young crop. “In Jammu and Kashmir you have to work in challenging environment attending both law and order and militancy related situations simultaneously. In the morning you may have to deal with law and order and in the afternoon some militancy related situation. This calls for all the more befitting mindset to tackle the situations entirely different in nature”, he told them.
Omar Abdullah said that Jammu and Kashmir Police Force is emerging as one of the efficient forces in the country and the officers at the helm have groomed in facing challenges and hard times. “They can guide you properly and nurture your talent in the best way”, he told them asking for utilizing their ability in rendering service to the people in best way.
The IPS probationers also asked various questions of personal nature to the Chief Minister and shared their experience of life in various fields with him.
The Director General Police, Kuldeep Khuda was also present in the meeting. He introduced the probationers to the Chief Minister and told about the nature of field job they have to attend in various districts of the State during the probation period.

Water mapping survey disappoints state planners

Tahir Mushtaq  GNS JAMMU, Mar 03: The much awaited water mapping survey conducted to find new sources of ground water in Jammu and Kashmir by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has found that most of the water reserves are unsuitable for human consumption. Sources said that the remote sensing technology survey carried out by the government with the help of ISRO has found high level of iron and fluoride contents in the underground sources of water found in the state.  The report says that many of the newly found underground water channels have been found at inaccessible locations, which need sophisticated technology to extract, beyond the range of equipment what the engineers are using in the country at the moment.
