TAC suggests severe punishment for overloading in vehicles

GNS JAMMU, FEB  22 :  Reconstituted State Transport Advisory Committee (TAC) met here today under the chairmanship of Minister for Transport Mr Qamar Ali Akhoon and deliberated on various issues related to regulation of traffic system in the State.
After threadbare discussions on wide ranging issues, TAC suggested severe punishment against those who indulge in overloading in both goods carriage and passenger vehicles. The  meeting further suggested that licenses shall be issued only to those who get training from 59 government registered Driving Training Institutes.  
It was also given out that the center has agreed to establish State of Art Driving Training Institute over 100 kanals of land one each in Kashmir and Jammu provinces. In addition, the State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) shall also make its Driving Institute fully functional shortly. 
The meeting was informed that an amount of Rs 8 crore has been  realised as fine from overloaded the vehicles   at Lower Munda check post during this year so far. It was also informed that 2 mobile Weigh Bridges shall be put into service by the end of March to check overloading in the Goods Carriage Vehicles.
It was given out in the meeting that the records of   1.73 thousand license holders of Jammu and Srinagar cities have been computerized and loaded on the website of the Transport Department. The process of computerization of record of licenses for other 5 major towns shall be completed by ending March this fiscal. 
It was disclosed in the meeting that Rs 4.11 crore have been spent on macadamization of General Bus Stand, Batamaloo adding that additional Rs 1 crore have been kept for construction of bathrooms, creation of drinking water facilities and sanitation purposes. 
It was also informed that a comprehensive plan of Rs 4.89 crore have been formulated by the Jammu Development Authority for developing and upgradation of Transport Nagar Narwal and submitted for approval, while as an amount of Rs 1.25 lakh is being incurred on improvement of inner roads, construction of sulabh and upgradation of damaged structure for which the work is in progress.
The meeting was further informed that government was contemplating  to identify   different    Sumos stands  in Srinagar city keeping in view   the problems being faced by the common people who had to wait for hours on road sides adding that no illegal parking should be allowed in the city.
The meeting further informed that in view of modernization of  General Bus Stand, Jammu  the Paloura and Nagrota bus stands  would be made operational. It was given out that Poonch-Rajouri bound vehicles shall operate from Paloura, while as Jammu-Udhampur-Batote-Banihal and Jammu-Batote-Doda-Kishtwar bound vehicles shall operate from Khanpora, Nagrota bus stand.

Lahuia, former MP Mr. Janak Raj Gupta ,former MLC Harbans Singh, Special Secretary Housing , RTO’s of Kashmir and Jammu, Vice Chairman JDA Mrs Sareeta Chauhan, MD JKSRTC J. S. Tandon, Joint Transport Commissioner, representatives of Transporter Associations and members of civil society attended the meeting.

Water mapping survey disappoints state planners

Tahir Mushtaq  GNS JAMMU, Mar 03: The much awaited water mapping survey conducted to find new sources of ground water in Jammu and Kashmir by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has found that most of the water reserves are unsuitable for human consumption. Sources said that the remote sensing technology survey carried out by the government with the help of ISRO has found high level of iron and fluoride contents in the underground sources of water found in the state.  The report says that many of the newly found underground water channels have been found at inaccessible locations, which need sophisticated technology to extract, beyond the range of equipment what the engineers are using in the country at the moment.
