PDP demands Daetwas Canal, restoration of defunct PHE schemes in Bandipur

Srinagar, May 3 :::  Critisizing the government for its inability to respond to the developmental needs of Bandipur, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today called for immediate  grant of technical clearance to Daetiwas irrigation project.
In a statement Chief Spokesperson of the party Naeem Akhtar and senior leader Nizamudin Bhat MLA today said it seems that the government was deliberately  sitting over the proposal of construction  of Daetiwas canal which could irrigate large tracts of land in Aragam, Garoora, Chitibandi, Brar and Gund Dachina areas. They said the detailed project report (DPR) for the project has been completed long back and is awaiting technical clearance from the concerned Minister who apparently is delaying it for political reasons.
The leaders said the villages that could benefit from the project, conceived many years back have large chunks of unirrigated lands whose productivity could increase manifold with this much delayed project and would transform the economy of the entire area.
Expressing concern at the slow progress in reactivating the defunct water supply schemes in Bandipur, Akhtar and Nizamudin said this had put residents of many villages to great difficulty. They said as many as eighteen PHE schemes in the area had been evaluated and found completely defunct for a long time. Though the project report for their revival are complete nothing has been done to take action on the ground though it had been decided that the execution would start within three months. “Even though many months have passed since then the projects are yet to see the light of the day”, they added.
The PDP leaders said even the on set of farming season had not made the concerned department see urgency in assisting the farming community. They said in Ajas area of Bandipur large chunks of paddy land are submerged in water which is traditionally dewatered with mechanical pumps. But the dewatering operation is yet to start because of either the lack of electric supply or diesel. The leaders urged the concerned department to immediately start the dewatering operation in Ajus area by resolving the fuel problem.
